Bruce Smith '70 chaired the Freshman Customs Committee during his sophomore year at Albright, where he addressed the newest class of Albrightians. Little did he know his future wife was in the crowd! Martha Smith '71 remembers seeing Bruce, but they wouldn't meet until later. Eventually, they began dating and were married in 1971 during Martha's senior year.

Bruce and Martha recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and their 50th reunions with the classes of 1970 and 1971. In addition, they were appointed honorary co-chairs of Albright's 1856 Legacy Society, the College's recognition club named for donors who have included Albright in their estate plans. When asked why they agreed to be the faces of this society, Martha replied, "The answer is simple—we were asked. If it helps Albright and the future of the College, we're in. We want Albright to prosper, thrive, and continue the great work it is doing for its students."

Bruce affirmed that their volunteerism for the 1856 Society is a tribute to memories of their time as students and for the people with whom they associate regularly. "We have a soft spot in our hearts for Albright. We've had several reunions with fellow Albrightians. These are lifelong friendships," said Bruce.

When asked why they included Albright in their estate plan, they replied: "We thought about the organizations that have had the most impact on our lives, and Albright had to be one of them. We hope others will feel the same way and know that through our combined commitments, no matter how ordinary, we can make an impact that is extraordinary."

"Albright's mission reflects our values," added Martha. "We appreciate that Albright is a diverse community that respects all people from different backgrounds. And by cultivating integrity, Albright supports each person's truth. Albright helps its students live up to their personal truth, expand their horizons, and nurture their abilities to meet challenges of growth in and out of the classroom."

"What better way to know you made a difference in life than to contribute to future generations through a financial commitment to Albright College," said Bruce. "Albright's students are the leaders who will shape the world for generations."
